Airbnb Window Cleaning Checklist for Hosts
An Airbnb window cleaning checklist has three parts: the glass guests touch, which gets wiped every turnover; a quick damage check of screens, sliders and locks; and a full deep clean of every window on a schedule. Most host checklists give windows one line. This one goes window by window, so nothing gets missed between stays.
It’s written for San Clemente and Dana Point rentals, where salt air and beach sand make windows a bigger job than in most places.

Why Windows Show Up in Airbnb Reviews
Airbnb says one of the most common reasons guests give fewer than five stars is a lack of cleanliness. Guests rate cleanliness on its own, and they also rate accuracy, which asks whether the home matched its up-to-date photos.
Windows touch both. Fingerprints on a sunny slider look like a home that wasn’t cleaned. And if your listing sells an ocean view, guests compare it with what they see through the glass. A hazy view feels like the photos promised more than the home delivered.
Every Turnover: The Glass Guests Touch
Your turnover crew doesn’t need to wash every window between stays. They need to catch the glass guests actually touched.
- Sliding and patio doors. Wipe handprints at hand and kid height, inside and out.
- Slider handles and latches. Wipe them and make sure every door locks.
- Mirrors and entry glass. Bathrooms, the entry and any glass tabletops.
- Blinds and curtains. Open them, straighten them and look for dust on the slats.
- Slider tracks. Look along each track. If there’s sand, vacuum it out.
- Sills. Wipe where guests set drinks, sunscreen and wet towels.
- The guest’s-eye test. Stand where a guest would and look through the glass at the view. Streaks show up best with the sun on them.
Wipe glass with a clean microfiber cloth, not paper towels, and avoid doing ocean-facing glass in full afternoon sun. See why windows streak if your crew keeps getting streaks.
Every Turnover: The Damage Check
Clean glass is half the job. The other half is making sure everything works. Hosts have had guests complain that windows wouldn’t open, when the guest just didn’t know how. Check each one so you know the difference.
| Check | What to look for | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Screens | Tears, bent frames, missing screens | Note it and plan a rescreen |
| Sliders | Doors that drag or jump the track | Clean the track first, then repair if it still sticks |
| Locks and latches | Anything that won’t lock or close fully | Fix before the next guest |
| Glass | Fog between panes, cracks, chipped corners | Photograph it and add it to your repair list |
| Blinds and curtains | Broken slats, pulled cords | Repair or replace |
Keep a window log
- Take dated photos of any new damage before the next guest checks in
- Report guest damage through Airbnb’s Resolution Center soon after checkout
- Keep a simple list of each window’s problems so repairs don’t get forgotten in busy weeks
On a Schedule: The Deep Clean
This is the full job that doesn’t fit into a turnover:
- The outside of every window, including upstairs glass
- Screens taken out, washed and dried (see how to clean window screens)
- Tracks and sills scrubbed, not just vacuumed
- Frames wiped down
- Glass railings and balcony panels (see how to clean glass railings)
- Skylights, if you have them
Plan it for a gap between bookings, before your busy season and before you update your listing photos.
San Clemente and Dana Point Rentals
Many rentals here sit near the sand, in the Pier Bowl, North Beach, Capistrano Beach and the Lantern District. That brings two problems inland homes mostly don’t have.
- Salt film on view glass. It builds up as a thin haze and shows in morning sun. See salt film on windows.
- Sand in slider tracks. Guests come back from the beach and walk straight through the slider. Grit in the track makes doors drag and can wear the rollers.
Both cities regulate short-term rentals. San Clemente calls them short-term lodging units and requires a permit and an operating license, and Dana Point requires a permit for each rental. Rules change, so check with your city.
Safety Checks for Family Guests
Window screens keep bugs out, but they aren’t strong enough to stop someone from falling through. If you host families with young children, consider window stops that keep windows from opening more than about four inches. Pick ones an adult can release, since bedroom windows also need to work as emergency exits. And move beds and furniture kids can climb away from upstairs windows.
When to Bring in a Pro
Most hosts handle the turnover checks themselves or through their cleaning crew. The deep clean is different: second-story glass, salt film and screens are a lot to fit into a booking gap. See vacation rental window cleaning in San Clemente for how that works, or screen and track cleaning if the tracks are the problem.
