How to Remove Stickers, Paint and Stucco From New Windows Without Scratching Them

New windows show up covered in labels, and remodels leave paint overspray, stucco splatter and plaster dust behind. Whether it’s a new build in Talega or a remodel near the Pier Bowl, the mess isn’t the real risk. Scratching brand-new glass while getting it off is. Here’s how to do it safely, and when to hand it off.

Common on New Windows

  • Manufacturer labels and stickers
  • Tape residue
  • Paint overspray
  • Stucco and mortar splatter
  • Plaster and drywall dust

How do you remove stickers from new windows? Clean the glass around the label first, soften the adhesive with warm soapy water or gentle heat from a hair dryer, then peel slowly from a corner and lift what’s left with a plastic scraper. Avoid dry scraping and metal blades, especially on tinted, coated or tempered glass, where they can scratch.

Removing Window Labels Step by Step

  1. Clean around the label. Dust and grit under a scraper is what scratches glass.
  2. Soften the adhesive. A hair dryer on medium for about a minute, or a warm soapy cloth held on the label, loosens it.
  3. Peel slowly from a corner while it’s still warm.
  4. Lift leftover residue with a plastic scraper and a glass-safe adhesive remover. Test it on a corner first.
  5. Wash and dry the glass so no film or solvent is left behind.

Factory labels use strong adhesive, and they tend to get harder to remove the longer they sit in the sun. Take them off soon after the windows go in.

Other Construction Messes, and How They Come Off

Fresh latex paint oversprayWarm soapy water and a soft clothLetting it cure for weeks
Dried paintSoften it, then lift it carefully with the right tool for that glassDry scraping or blades on tempered or coated glass
Stucco and mortar splatterSoak it until it softens, then lift it offGrinding it off dry. It’s full of sand

Clean frames and tracks too. Construction dust packs into them. See how to clean window tracks.

Why Razor Blades Are Risky on New Glass

Fabricating debris. Some tempered glass leaves the factory with tiny glass particles fused to the surface. A razor drags those particles across the glass and leaves scratches, even when it’s used carefully.

It’s a manufacturing flaw. Scratches on new tempered glass often come from this debris, not from careless cleaning. Quality varies between glass makers.

Tempered glass is everywhere. Sliding doors, glass doors and many large or low panes are tempered. Professionals check the small stamp in the corner of the glass before using any blade.

Tinted and coated glass. Metal blades and aggressive scraping can damage tint and coatings, turning a sticker problem into a glass replacement problem.

When to Call a Pro

  • A whole house or remodel’s worth of new windows
  • Dried paint or stucco on tempered sliders and doors
  • Second-story glass with labels and overspray
  • Before a final walkthrough, listing photos or move-in

New Window Cleanup FAQs

It’s risky. Tempered glass can have fused factory debris that a razor drags into scratches, and blades can damage tint and coatings. Try heat, soapy water and a plastic scraper first.

Gentle heat, then a glass-safe adhesive remover and a plastic scraper. Test the remover on a corner first and wash the glass afterward.

Soften it first, then lift it carefully with a tool that suits the glass. On tempered or coated glass, it’s safer to have a professional do it.

Soak it until it softens, then lift it off. Never grind stucco off dry. The sand in it scratches glass.

Often it’s fabricating debris: tiny glass particles fused to tempered glass at the factory. Scraping drags them across the surface.

It depends on the number of windows and how much paint, stucco and labels are on them. Call (949) 203-0880 for a free quote.
